ADHD Testing for Adults

Assessments for ADHD range from free online quizzes to comprehensive professional testing, with many options in between.

Some tests have a limited scope, including only certain components, and may not provide a full analysis or a certain diagnosis.

Concurrently, practitioners and organizations that offer ADHD testing range from ADHD coaches to General Practitioners (MD’s), Psychiatrists (MD’s) and Doctors of Psychology (PsyD’s).

In the absence of guideline standards and legal definitions for ADHD testing, it’s easy to understand how individuals feel uncertain about which test is best, who to engage for testing, the cost of testing, whether insurance will cover it, if a diagnosis received is accurate, and how to use results to pursue a pathway for treatment.

At ADHD Assessment Clinic, we openly share our process and the components of our testing.

We want you to understand exactly what our testing includes, what we are looking for, and what you will receive upon completion of your assessment. Working with us means questions are answered, doubt is left behind, and you not only know what your symptoms mean but what steps to take next.

Comprehensive Test Components

Purpose in the assessment for ADHD

What Test Measures

Tests to Determine ADHD

Attention and Concentration

We evaluate the ability to sustain attention, resist distractions, and maintain effort over time, as these are commonly impacted in individuals with ADHD.

Memory

We assess visual and verbal memory, as well as immediate and delayed memory. This helps us evaluate how impaired attention affects the encoding, maintenance, and manipulation of auditory and visual information in immediate, delayed, and working memory tasks.

Tests to Determine Academic Functioning

Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary

Provides valuable information, particularly related to dyslexia. We assess an individual’s understanding of written material, their reading rate, and grasp of vocabulary in a context.

Writing Difficulties

Implemented to assess for a learning disability like dysgraphia, we evaluate difficulties with written expression.

Math Problem-Solving, Numerical Operations, and Math Fluency

Provides valuable information, particularly related to dyscalculia. We assess an individual’s ability to make sense of mathematical ideas, knowledge, and retrieval of mathematical facts, as well as their ability to recall basic facts.

We want to recognize patients’ perceptions of their executive functioning to better understand their experiences. We also want to assess and compare it to their actual executive functioning abilities by evaluating their ability to plan, problem-solve, shift between tasks, inhibit their responses, and adapt to changing tasks, as these can impact academic, social, and occupational functioning.

Executive Functioning

Assessing various aspects of personality, including mood, interpersonal functioning, and cognitive and emotional styles, alongside severe comorbid conditions, helps us prioritize treatment, particularly when individuals present with severe depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, or PTSD. This ensures that urgent issues are addressed before focusing on ADHD symptoms.

Personality

We assess verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. This helps us understand how individuals with relatively high scores may mask their symptoms through compensatory abilities, while also shedding light on attentional deficits through measures like processing speed, visual-motor coordination, and executive functioning.
